There are a million articles and posts about things that might help traumatic brain injury (TBI)
The app is Calm, available for apple and android devices. It comes with a 7 day trial for free and then requires a yearly subscription. I personally have a subscription because I feel like peace and mindfulness is something you can’t put a price on. The fee is totally reasonable and worth it, and I’m not even paid to say that! Calm was actually rated app of the year.
The Daily Calm
Each day the app provides you with what they call “the daily calm”, which is a 10-12 minute guided meditation. I had tried for many years, before I got hurt, to learn the art of meditation and mindfulness, never succeeding until I started using the Calm app.
The app has other guided meditation series as well as the daily calm to help you relax. Things like the 7 days of calm, deep sleep, calming flight anxiety, staying on track, deep sleep release, mindful eating series, body scan, 7 days of sleep, 7 days of calming anxiety, deep sleep relax, mindfulness at work, 7 days of managing stress, 21 days of calm, 7 days of self-esteem…and many more!
The meditations are all guided step by step in a soothing voice. It says quite often if your mind wanders away, that is okay, just come back to the breath. If a thought comes into your mind, just let it pass like a leaf floating down a stream.
This is what helped me to finally succeed with mindfulness. When I was trying to learn before, I would get frustrated if my mind wandered and just get up and quit. The C
Personalized Wall Papers & Music
The app provides a beautiful variety of wallpapers for you to chose from. All gorgeous serene landscapes. Another thing that I love is “music”. It is relaxing sounds like the sound of waves on the beach or a thunderstorm. The sounds of nature really. I haven’t heard any that I don’t like and I listen to them often as I fall asleep
The Calm app also has what they call sleep stories that will help you fall into a deep and natural sleep. The sleep stories are about 20-30 minutes long. You will find different stories to appeal to a wide variety of interests.
The app keeps track of how many “mindful days” you have had in
Perfect for those who are goal oriented or big planners like me. It’s always nice to scratch something off your list.
Why I Love It So Much
Part of rehabilitating from TBI and Post Concussive Syndrome (PCS) is learning to accept your new normals, to be mindful and calm. All of these things are hard to do when you are going through the struggles and frustrations of healing from a brain injury.
The Calm app will teach you how to meditate and teach you the meaning of mindfulness if you don’t already know. It will encourage you to make time for mindfulness meditation daily.
After each daily calm meditation you complete, it provides a quote and a gorgeous photo meme. They are all so inspiring, I save them all to my camera roll.
Being able to calm your mind and be relaxed in the present moment is a skill that will make your quality of life as a TBI/PCS patient much improved. It is an encouraging tool to help you stay in the moment, think positive and conquer anxious tendencies.
Do the 7-day free trial, I’m telling you, I think you will find it well worth the cost of a years subscription!
