This is a not so serious worst day with horses. I don’t remember exactly when it was. At least 5 or so years ago, because it was when my Kemerton was still rideable. My trainer and I had decided that we should body clip him so he wouldn’t sweat so much and would be easier to manage for winter riding.
Let’s just say Kemerton, especially back then, was not a calm quiet horse. He has always hated being groomed. In his opinion, he should only have to stand tied long enough to get tacked up and go to work. He never minded working, he was a thoroughbred who raced for many years and he had a great work ethic.
In other words, he wasn’t interested in anything that involved standing still for long periods of time. Not to mention, in the cold with two people trying to clip off his winter coat.
I don’t remember how long it took. It took two of us forever to get it done. Between the fact that every pair of clipper blades that were supposed to be brand new and sharpened were dull. The
Not Fond of Pampering
It was like wrestling a wild giraffe. Kemerton was pissed, he hated being coddled over like we were. He was pissed we were clipping off his winter coat. Worst of all he was pissed that we were making him stay still for so long. Kemerton is like a little 4-year-old kid, constantly in motion. We took turns, one person wrestling to hold him still and keep him from getting tangled up in the extension cord, while the other tried to clip his hair off without getting trampled.
It was awful! One of the worst horse experiences that I have had. Especially with Kemerton, since he is usually such a happy go lucky horse.
Luckily, now that the old man is crippled beyond riding sound anymore, lucky for him (and for me) he gets to keep his winter coat!
