I Have Often Said I Wish Summer Camp Was In Any Season Besides Summer!
Our riding ring has no shade, I hate flies! The kids whine about getting hot. Keeping everyone hydrated, people and horses is a constant problem.
Well, today we had a camp day. A cold weather day camp. I still stand by my comment that I wish summer camps could be in any other season.
Low 40’s No Sun
It doesn’t sound too great for an outdoor camp day. Actually, it turned out just fine. It was a small group, so we could cram in my kitchen to get warm and do our inside activities.
The weather was not cold for the girls riding, they were moving around and plenty bundled up. It was just my working student and me who were sitting there that was cold!
Small Group=Extra Special Camp
We had a few other students signed up that canceled at the last minute because of cold or other reasons. It was a small group, to begin with. With cancellations, I ended up with just three girls!
Lots Of Riding Time
Since it was a small group and they all could ride together, they rode for over two hours. The first part was the lesson. In the second part, we played a mounted game. It was a new game we came up with involving different colored rocks and barrels, and a giant soup spoon. I think this game could use some tweaking but it was cool and the kids had fun!
We made an adorable, feed the turkey craft/game. It was so cute and the kids loved it! Here is where I found it.
Build A Farm Project
The inspiration for this I have to say came from my nephews. They use boxes for art projects all the time. They have made all kinds of stuff, an aquarium, a dog kennel, a battleship…A good cardboard box has endless possibilities!
I have an overabundance of amazon boxes. This is what gave me the lightbulb moment that I would have the kids build a farm. We talked about all the things they thought a farm should have. Then we dug into the depths of our camp craft shed for anything we thought they might use to build their farm.
Not only did the project turn out adorable, but the kids also LOVED it and would have worked at it adding more and more components if they had not run out of time.
I Had So Much Fun Today!
The difference in today’s camp and many of the other camps that I have run was that the kids enjoyed doing the same sort of things I did when I was a horse-crazy kid.
I have found that often kids these days don’t like to pretend or use their imagination, which makes it hard for me to plan. In my mind, I think of all the things I did when I was little and for the life of me can’t understand why most of the time, I get eye rolls and no interest whatsoever!
Flashback To My Childhood, I Was Finally Among Kindred Spirits!
Not today, they all loved it and got totally into it. It was great, I felt like I was among kindred spirits today. It is refreshing to know that though it seems like a lot of the time there are no dedicated hardcore horse-crazy kids anymore, Among all the lesson kids a few true horse-crazy kids still exist.
