So, the first day we worked with Cool was on Sunday. Due to two days of rain, today (Wednesday) was the next opportunity we had.
On Sunday, it was Christina that was working Cool. Today, it was Amelia, my working student.
A Lot Different
Cool was a lot different today than he was Sunday. He already managed to figure out we are trying to put him in work again and there was definitely a bit of attitude that was not there on Sunday.
Groomed Him On The Crossties
Amelia groomed him on the crossties this time. On Sunday, Christina groomed him in his stall. He was fidgety on the crossties. Not terrible but he definitely wasn’t content and knew something was up.
He especially hated the sports medicine boots we put on him and he actually took a swing at Amelia a few times with his hind leg as she was putting them on and after.
Curiosity vs. Tension
On Sunday, when Cool got out to the ring he was pretty curious about what was going on. Scatterbrained really, looking this way and that. I would not have used the word tense to describe him though. Today, on the other hand, there was no doubt he was tense and on edge when he got out there.
He had one little outburst and managed to trample over the mounting block…He definitely was showing attitude and his displeasure with being out there working again.
Despite the tense start, he did settle in and do some nice relaxed work on the lunge at the walk and trot. Definitely we need to work on him responding to voice commands on the lunge line. A lot of the time he is in la-la land and it takes asking one too many times to get him to do what you want. That is easy enough to fix though, we will just continue to do lots of transitions on the lunge line.
I don’t know if it was because he was so tense today and we worked him through it, or if he was tired…but his leading and ground manners were much better today. That was a nice surprise!
Day 3 Plan
Unless something weird happens, Day 3 is going to be tomorrow. It will be interesting to see as we continue to work with him on how he responds. How many days will he show us an attitude before he behaves himself? I have no idea, but we are about to find out! The good thing about Cool though is that he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. When he is being bad it is just like a kid having a tantrum. You kind of just have to ignore it and then move on!
We have not seen any indication that Cool’s hip is not completely healed. He has looked good and sound thus far, so cross your fingers!
Video’s To Come Tomorrow
I would have loved to include them in this post, but YouTube is being stubborn and I have run out of patience for today!
