Cool stood well on the cross ties yesterday. We put the saddle on him without any signs of him being girthy. Or that tightening the saddle on his back was causing him any pain.
Well Behaved On The Lunge Line At Walk And Trot
He was super well behaved on the lunge line. I was very happy to see that he was not nearly as tense as yesterday. He still needs work on his voice commands, but it’s only been three days! So we have to give him a break on that!
We cantered him on the lunge yesterday. I expected at the canter he might get a little crazy! He wasn’t though, he did much better than and was much calmer than I had expected.
Definitely to the left ( the previously injured side) he was tracking as forward with that leg at times. There were a few times on the videos where he looked like he was “hopping” on that leg. Not all the time though, which is encouraging. I think he just needs to build more strength and flexibility. That is only to be expected with as much time off as he has had!
He also cross- cantered a few times each direction. Most likely because he was crooked with his head to the inside and haunches drifting out on the circle.
He Broke A Sweat!
Poor Cool, he did break a sweat, but he was not breathing or blowing super hard, so I don’t think we overdid it!
Stiffness On The Left Hind
When asked to turn on the haunches( move his hind end around his front end), he could easily stretch his right hind across. The left hind leg stretching across was obviously harder for him. His expression was obviously uncomfortable.
That is something we will focus on using groundwork. Trying to build up the strength and muscle until he can use his left hind leg fully and comfortably again.
Mother Nature is not on our side. Since they are calling for rain, he will most likely get two days off and then pick up again. If all goes well I’m thinking after a two-day break we will try to work him three days in a row next week.
Also, by the end of next week assuming he doesn’t show us any crazy dramatics, someone will get on him and take him for a nice relaxed jaunt around the ring.
