A Dog’s Story
One day a young family put their old dog in the car.
They didn’t drive him very far.
The place they took him was scary and cold.
He stood loyally at their side while they signed him away.
He didn’t know what was happening until they turned and walked away.
They were leaving him there, he wasn’t going home. The people he loved were leaving him all alone.
Why? He thought were they doing this to him?
He had been by their side through thick and thin.
The dog had never thought growing old was a sin!
Who would have thought this is where he would end up!
Will they give their children away when they grow up?
A nice lady took him to his new home.
It was small, cold and dark.
He began to panic and he started to bark.
The other dogs barked too, but nobody came.
Was this some kind of mean game?
It wasn’t it was true.
The sweet dog woke up, in a place as crazy as a zoo!
Some of the dogs seemed crazy too!
There were people to feed him,
Sometimes he got to go outside.
He was so sad and confused he wanted to go run and hide.
Every so often people would walk through and look in the cages.
The kennel people would show them around. He would hurry to the front of the cage.
But the people always walked away when they heard his age.
He realized very quickly that he wasn’t wanted.
His face was gray, but he was still kind hearted.
Over and over again people came to his cage,
Just to walk away when they heard his age.
He stopped getting up when people came.
His life was sad and he was tired of getting his hopes up in this depressing game.
One day a lady came and sat down outside his cage door.
A lady he had never seen before.
Something told him he should get up and walk to the front.
This was the most promising thing that has happened to him since he’d been dumped.
She looked into his sad brown eyes,
But didn’t mind those gray hairs that no way he could hide.
The lady was soft spoken and kind.
He was afraid that she too, might leave him behind.
She walked away and the old dog stood and watched her go.
If a dog could have had tears in his eyes he would have let them flow.
It was when he thought that she would never come back,
She came walking toward his cage and set down her backpack.
When she opened her backpack she pulled out a collar and leash.
Was it happening? Was he finally getting released?
The lady put the collar and leash on the old dog ,then reached down in her pack.
She had brought the old man a delicious snack!
He had never been so proud as she led him out of this place.
The nice lady had the happiest look on her face.
She had a blanket on the seat for him to cuddle up in on the long ride.
When they got to the place they were going two excited children were standing there,
Excited to have a new friend to love and give the best care.
He looked around at the green grass and the white picket fence yard.
His journey was a hard one and so many times he just gave up completely.
The dog forgave his old family for leaving him behind.
An old dog is the most loyal and kind.
He knew he had found a new home full of love and care.
He was happy and proud to be living there.
The moral of the story is that every dog deserves a home.
Even the ones who are old and gray in the face deserve to live in a sweet loving place!
