Getting Me Out Of The House
Besides doctor’s appointments and PT, taking yoga lessons was the first activity that I did after getting hurt that got me out and about.
Anxiety Over What People Think
It was in the beginning when I walked with the walker that I always felt self-conscious and was worried about what people thought of me. Now that I’m more mobile and using the “sticks” to walk as I call them, I hardly ever think about what people are thinking or if they noticed me. Getting out of the house and having something to focus on when I was out of the house in the beginning, helped me over my fear of being out around people.
It also was a new environment, unlike when I went back out to the barn with the horses. Since that is where I got hurt it created a lot of anxiety and panic being out there. Luckily, going to yoga to begin with. Then branching out to other places helped me get my anxiety under control so I could begin to reacclimate to being around horses again.
Something To Look Forward To
Having a weekly outing not having to do with doctors or physical therapy really helped get my spirits up.
Something To Work Toward
Having a new skill to practice gave me something new to work on at home. The best part of it was that I can see my hard work pay off. I make progress weekly. My teacher always comments.
So even when my PT goals seem to be progressing more slowly than I’d like. I feel like it makes me feel much better to have something that I can work towards and see ( and feel) my progress.
Improving My Posture/ Core Strength
From leaning forward onto my walker for so long my posture got pretty bad. Before I got hurt that was one thing I could say was that I did have good posture. A product of years of riding horses.
The walker quickly undid that great posture! Yoga has been a great help with that. It has taught me to stay focused on spacial awareness. I think it helped me to get more upright which accelerated my ability to transition on to the sticks I’m now using.
I Think Yoga Is Great
Yoga has been a great addition to all the things that I’m doing to heal. I’m sure it is not for everyone, but for me, it filled a missing piece in my rehabilitation. One that I didn’t even know that I needed. The physical and mental benefits for me have been fabulous.
Are You A TBI Patient Too?
If you are, maybe you have a missing piece that you haven’t found yet. It could be anything, for me it’s yoga. If you feel like you are recovering I think you should branch out and try something new. Give yourself something to look forward to. Every opportunity is a way to gain confidence in yourself.
The more things that you can find to do, the more confident you will feel. It is working for me, so I’m going to continue doing it. You should try it I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
