Ever Since The Accident…
After the accident I struggled with a lot of symptoms memory included. I have noticed now that I’m able to do more my memory is way worse.
Probably, realistically,it has been like this all along. Earlier in the healing process I had so many other fish to fry that I didn’t notice my memory loss.
Long Term Memory
My long term memory is better, much better, than my short term memory. I can remember things from a long time ago. Mostly about horses. Every once in a while I will draw a blank on something but it is a lot less often than short term things.
Short Term Memory
My short term memory sucks. I have a bunch of examples just over the last month.
Tycen has brought to my attention quite frequently that I have asked questions repetitively. It’s like the information goes in,but then floats away somewhere and is gone.
I have a very hard time keeping track of my schedule even though I have an app for it. As well as a planner book that I write everything in.
We needed some medication and supplements for the horses to be ordered. My mom asked me multiple times to please order it. I must have forgotten over a period of two weeks at least where she reminded me every other day. Finally, she called me and said DO IT NOW!
Out At The Barn
We have recently started a new lesson session so there are a lot of new faces at the barn. I have heard all of their names and was introduced to all of them. Yet, I still can’t remember there names.
I guess I need to write descriptions of each one when I’m reminded of their names. As creepy as that may sound.
All of our horses have lived in the same field forever. This weekend, twice, I almost put horses out in the wrong field. Which could be a disaster! Luckily, I was able to fix the situation before the horses really noticed.
Worst Mistake So Far
This morning I was helping to bring the horses in and I took the first horse out of the top field. I literally just walked her away without shutting the gate. Shutting gates should be an automatic thing I do since I have been into horses my whole life.
Not today, I walked the horse I had into her stall and when I turned around to go back for the next one there they were, all the other ones outside the gate eating grass. Luckily, none of them went running around like crazy or gave me trouble catching them.
Another mistake I made this morning was that I had to be reminded not to let the lead line hang down within tripping reach of the horse or me. This is baby stuff! The most basic things that you learn early in your horse career! How could I possibly forget them? That is why I say “Memory, Oh memory, where have you gone?
Memory Improvement Activities
I learned some memory activities to do when I was in PT early on.
The first of which is any kind of matching game. There are tons of apps and websites for working on memory.
My favorite that I learned in PT, one that is really hard, is using a deck of cards and matching all of them. In PT we used to do it a couple times and time it to see if I was getting better.
Focusing On Recovery
T.B.I has so many aspects that need to be worked on to reach the best level of recovery we can. Through out the whole process I have gone back and fourth working on different things. Right now, it’s memory!!!
Any Suggestions To Work On Memory?
If anyone has any suggestions of other activities to work on memory I’m all ears!
