You May Remember Finny From A Post Before
I posted about him a while back and how he was misbehaving. Acting a fool and bucking. Well he got over that, thank goodness.
Since then though he was intermittently unsound for a month or two. Until recently, when he has been unsound all the time.
The worst part of it is that he is not only unsound in the front end but also in the back end.
We had the vet out a few weeks ago to do a lameness evaluation on him. He tested positive to the hoof testers, which tells us his soles are sore on his front feet.
Aside from the hoof testers, she did a whole bunch of different flexion tests. Also we lunged him.
The vet used a nerve block on his front feet, and about a half hour later we lunged him. He was MUCH more comfortable! Which tells us his pain in fact was coming from his front feet.
One Thing At A Time
So basically, the front feet issue is easily addressed. The vet recommend that we try putting shoes with pads on him. In hopes that once his front end is more comfortable his back end will be more comfortable again. She is thinking he has somehow been compensating for the pain in his front end with his hind end. Makes sense to me so we will see how it goes.
Got His Feet Done Tuesday
Finn got his feet done on Tuesday. Nailed on shoes, with a full leather pad and magic cushion underneath. This evening, I plan on hopping on him in just a little walk and trot and see how he seems.
He Is An Old Man
Finny is 23. Hopefully, between the vet and the farrier, we can get him comfortable again so I can ride him regularly. My other horse Kemerton is also old and only sound enough to walk and trot a little. Finny needs to get better so I can ride him and do more. The more I ride, the more I will continue to get stronger and heal from my TBI symptoms.
Other Things That Hopefully Help
Finn wears bell boots all the time, and he will continue to that way he is less likely to step on himself and pull off his shoes.
The farrier also mentioned his heels were a bit soft and so I decided I would start using Keratex hoof hardener on his feet. This is a great product I have used in the past that I have had good results with.
Cross you fingers and stay tuned for news on how Finn is making out with his new shoes!
